Commitment

The act of committing oneself to the task at hand, to a cause. 

The ancient Greeks were notorious for burning their ships when they arrived to conquer a new land.  They were committed to victory, so much so that they removed their only means of escape.  It was victory or death!  That's hard core!  Cortes also burned his ships in 1519 when he landed in Mexico.  Again, victory or death! 

What can we learn from this history?  No, you shouldn't burn your car when you go in for a sales call.  What you should do though is commit yourself to a cause.  So many times I hear people (and I'm occasionally guilty of it too) say "I'll give it a shot" or "We'll see how it goes".  Well how do you think it's going to go if you aren't putting in 100% effort?  Don't give yourself an out.  Whatever your chosen endeavor, jump in head first, don't just put your toe in the water. 

When you are networking, whether it's at a meeting or a social event, give it 100% effort.  You will get out what you put in.  You are all hard working, passionate and enthusiastic; share that with everyone you meet and it will come back to you.
